Employees of the Atomic Energy Agency of the Plurinational State of Bolivia (ABEN) have finished their studies and received diplomas from Tomsk Polytechnic University. In the future they will become employees of the Laboratory of Radiobiology and Radioecology of the Center for Nuclear Research and Technology (CNRT), a project of the Rosatom State Corporation in El Alto.
Since 2019, Tomsk Polytechnic University, as one of the core universities of Rosatom, has been involved in personnel training and development of curriculum for the project of Rosatom State Corporation in Bolivia - the Nuclear Research and Technology Center (NRTC) in El Alto. During this time, employees of the Multipurpose Irradiation Center (MPC) have already been trained at TPU.
The second group of 15 people arrived at TPU in December 2023. The professional training program was organized on a modular basis and included such disciplines as the basics of radiobiology and radioecology, microbiology, biotechnology, agronomy, emergency planning, and others.
"The future CNRT laboratory will work in two main areas - radiobiology and radioecology, so the course program was designed to provide our trainees with all the necessary skills and competencies. For this purpose we have partnered with the Siberian Research Institute of Agriculture and Peat (a branch of SFSCA RAS). This helped us expand the pool of experts. The basic part of the course in the field of radioecology was taught by employees of the TPU School of Nuclear Engineering, and the practical training was held at our nuclear research reactor. Disciplines of radiobiology were taught at the Siberian Research Institute of Agriculture and Peat. In addition, our students were able to gain practical experience both in the research laboratories and classrooms of Tomsk Polytechnic University, and at the sites of the partner institute, on the premises of its experimental farm. In this way we managed to create the most practice-oriented educational path," says Vera Verkhoturova, the TPU Rector's Advisor on External Relations.
Classes of the program on Nuclear and radiation technologies in the operation of the laboratory of radiobiology and radioecology at Tomsk Polytechnic University were held in English. In addition to theoretical knowledge and practical skills, the emphasis was put on the development of competencies necessary for a modern specialist. These include the ability to work in a team, to manage the project at all stages of its life cycle, communication skills, analysis and assessment of possible risks, ability to formulate technical tasks correctly.
In general, about 40 future employees of the El Alto Nuclear Research and Technology Center have completed their studies and are still studying at Tomsk Polytechnic University.
